Primestock

On Wednesday 11th September 2019 Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock with 74 cattle comprising 63 cull cattle and 11 prime bulls, 1367 prime sheep including 947 lambs and 420 cast ewes and rams.

Prime Bulls sold to a top of 193.5p for a Limousin from Messrs P&PI Walker & Son, Beechcroft. Top gross was £1343.22 for a Limousin from D&MA Wilson, Lamplugh Hall.

A good entry of Cast Cows sold to a top of 149.5p for a Limousin from G&T Tyson, East House. Top gross was £1040.25 for a British Blue again from G&T Tyson, East House. Dairy Cows topped at 135.5p or £948.50 for a Holstein Friesian from WE Callion & Sons, Lodge Farm.

Prime Sheep

A smaller entry of Prime Lambs sold to increased rates. Top of £111 for Texel Lambs from Messrs Cartmel, High Low Hall selling to Haighs Butchers, Wokrington. Top pence per kilo also went to Messrs Cartmel, High Low Hall selling to 231.10ppk for a Bleu du Maine again purchased by Haighs Butchers.

Today we also had the prime lamb show for Mules of 10 Bonny Boys.  Judging was professionally carried out by Martin Richardson, Cockermouth who awarded First Prize, Champion and the NEMSA rosette to JA Ritson, Baggra Yeat.  These lambs later sold for £74.50.  2nd prize went to lambs from BW Hewitson, Shatton Lodge and sold for £76.50 and the 3rd prize lambs, from Messrs Marrs, Manor Farm sold for £66.50.

Cast Ewes sold to another strong trade to a top of £131 for Texel Ewes from Messrs Sewell, Mayfield. Fell ewes in demand to a top of £43 for a pen from M&GM Fox, Crosbythwaite.
