On Friday 4th & 5th October 2018 Mitchells Auction Co, Cockermouth, Cumbria held the annual 2 day sale of Herdwick breeding ewes and rams. A highlight of the Mitchells Calendar, this sale continues to attract purchasers from across the country which in turn ensured a flying trade was witnessed for the largest entry seen for some time.
The Show was kindly sponsored by Jelf Insurance, Robinson+Co Accountants, Hundith Hill Hotel, Mitchells Livestock and T.W.Relph & Sons. Judging was in the hands of Mr Tony Temple, Blackhall. After some deliberation the Championship was awarded to AD&T Harrison, Brotherilkeld, Eskdale for their pen of Shearlings which later sold for £280.
The days’ trade was topped at £350 per head for a pen of Five Herdwick Ewes from R Wilkinson & R Tennant, Gatesgarth Farm, Buttermere selling to Corinne Siddall. The next top price of £300 was paid for a pen of five Shearlings from Anthony Hartley, Turner Hall, Seathwaite also purchased by Corinne Siddall.
The trade could only be described as outstanding from start to finish ensuring all vendors went home happy.

A good entry of Continental and Cheviot Rams was met with a good commercial ringside of buyers. Trade topped at £600 twice; firstly for a Texel Shearling from G Wilkinson, Arkleby House and then again for a Charollais Lamb from H Wilson, Swallow Heights.
