On Wednesday 27th May 2020 Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock with 63 cattle comprising 49 cull cattle and 14 prime bulls and clean cattle, 849 prime sheep including 471 spring lambs, 235 hoggs and 143 cast ewes and rams.

Leading the sale in price per kilo was a shapely Limousin bull from Messrs Taylor & Gill, Fell End selling for 210 pence per kilo.  Top price per head was achieved for a tremendous Simmental bull from TA Byers, Ellenbank at £1429.90.

Cast Cows sold to a marvellous trade being the dearest trade seen for some time. All classes were on another level surpassing all expectations. Top price of 203ppk was paid for a 29m old Heifer from G Gate, Hollins Farm. Top gross was £1366.70 (173ppk) for a Limousin cow from J Brown & Sons, Crakeplace Hall. Another Limousin to £1356.30 (165ppk) from BW Hewitson, Shatton Lodge. Dairy Cows topped at 163p for a Danish Red from T Dixon, High House. Holstein Friesians to 158p from J Mounsey, Grange Farm. Holstein Friesians to £1129.5o from JP Lister, Oughterside Mill. Vendors are encouraged to take advantage of current extreme rates being achieved.

Prime Sheep

Following on from the end of the Ramadan festival at the weekend prime lambs sold easier on the week in line with national trends. The days top price of £126 was paid twice, once for a Texel Lamb weighing 49kg from J Jackson & Son, Frizington Parks purchased by Mohamed Alam and again for a pair of Suffolks weighing 51kg also from Frizington Parks this time purchased by Wilson Butchers, Main Steet, Egremont. Top pence per kilo was 279.1p for Beltex Lambs from A&C Park, Seaview purchased by West Scottish Lamb.
