On Wednesday 8th July 2020 Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock with 56 cattle comprising 42 cull cattle and 14 prime bulls and clean cattle, 1502 prime sheep including 1100 prime lambs and 402 cast ewes.

Leading the sale in price per kilo was a smart Limousin bull from J & HD Langcake, Sandhills Farm selling for 209 pence to Thomas Fell.  Top price in this section was a British Blue bull from WE Callion & Sons, Lodge Farm achieving £1237.28 purchased by G Moor.

Prime Heifer (Top price per kilo – pence):-  Limousin – 194, 188 Hunday Farm.

Prime Heifer (Top price per head - £):-  Limousin – 1067.84, 989.40 Hunday Farm.

Prime Bull (Top price per kilo – pence):-  Limousin – 209 Sandhills Farm.  British Blue – 182, 177 East Mill Farm, 176 Lodge Farm.  Holstein Friesian – 149, 147 Lodge Farm.

Prime Bull (Top price per head - £):-  British Blue – 1237.28 Lodge Farm, 1183, 1090.32 East Mill Farm.  Limousin – 1174.58 Sandhills Farm.  Holstein Friesian – 932.74, 902.58 Lodge Farm.

Cast Cow trade continues to hold up with tremendous returns being achieved week on week. Heading up the trade today was a fantastic consignment of fed Continental Cows from RE Miller, West Farm, Aspatria topping at 165p per kilo twice, firstly for a Limousin and then again for a Charolais; top gross of £1336.50 for a Limousin from the same good home and an average of £1275.05. Top price for Dairy was 143p for a Montbeliarde from Messrs Dixon, Ewanrigg. Holstein Friesians upto £1174.28 from Messrs Greening, Waverbank.  

Many more cows could be well sold each week.

Prime Sheep

Prime Lambs although easier on the week, continue to be far in excess of last years prices and look a strong trade. Top price of £129 for Texel Lambs from J&M Wilson, Meadow Farm selling to Haighs Butchers, Workington. The top price per kilo was 273.9p for Beltex Lambs from R&S Purdham, Low Boonwood purchased by W Lindsay & Son Butchers, Cockermouth. Texels to 262.5p (£128) from Messrs Parkin, Home Farm purchased by Wilson Butchers, Egremont.

Light lambs continue to be in keen demand with several vendors taking advantage of the current trade with 33kg Texels from J Mattinson & Son, Burthwaite selling for £80. A ring full of ContxHerdwick Lambs from M Holliday, Simonscales sold to £76 for 34kg.

Heavy Lambs remain good to sell with many pens selling in excess of £105.

Ewes a fantastic trade being dearer again on the week. Top price of £156 for a Texel ewe from Messrs Brough, Chapel House. Fell ewes to £64 for Swaledales from P&PI Walker, Beechcroft.

Texel ewes averaged £96.14 whilst Suffolks averaged £91.38.
