On Wednesday 22nd July 2020 Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock with 65 cattle comprising 43 cull cattle, 13 prime bulls and 9 clean cattle, 1648 prime sheep including 1026 prime lambs and 622 cast ewes and rams.

Leading the sale in price per kilo and per head was an outstanding Limousin heifer from I & CL Richardson, Greenlands selling for 236 pence (£1420.72) purchased by Wilson Willis Butchers, Cleator Moor. Many more prime young bulls and butchers type cattle would sell to extreme rates to please you the sellers.

Cast cows again have picked up momentum with prices being some 5ppk dearer on the week. Continental cows were led by a nice Limousin x from Old Hyton 179ppk was achieved. Dairy cast cows were sold to a wonderful high of 155ppk shown from Barn Yard. The same vendor also achieved £1192.62 for a cow weighing 858kg (139pence). Burton House Farm was another local dairy farmer achieving dizzy heights of £1325.30 (145ppk).

Not forgetting a high percentage of plainer type cows were forward theses sold in the 90pence to 104pence per kilo band.

Prime Sheep

Prime lamb SQQ average was 225.28ppk this being some what sharper than the Monday and Tuesday national averages. A competitive ring of buyers was again added to looking for top quality sheep. Leading the market with a Beltex lamb at £134 from Aspatria Hall and was purchased by Tommy Bradley on behalf of Haighs Workington.

Cast Ewes a marvellous trade. Top of £156 for a Texel Ewe from KA&R Campbell, Shepherd’s Hotel. Fell ewes topped at £70 for Herdwicks from Messrs Eilbeck, Plumbland. Two large pens of Herdwick Weathers sold to £69 and £68.50 from P Edmondson, Seathwaite. Swale ewes topped at £66 from JW Hartley, Low Priorscsales.
