Primestock

On Wednesday 12th August 2020 Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock with 55 cattle comprising 33 cull cattle and 22 prime bulls and clean cattle, 2660 prime sheep including 1873 lambs and 787 cast ewes and rams.

 

Prime Bulls again a strong trade topping at 223p or £1516.40 for a Limousin from D&MA Wilson, Lamplugh Hall. The pick of the Black and Whites topped at 179p or £1167.08 for a Friesian Bull from WE&DE Litt, Greengill.

A smaller entry of Cast Cows forward. Trade still electric up to 179p or £1131.28 for a Limousin from A&L Gott, Prospect House. Black and Whites sold to 143p also from A&L Gott, Prospect House. Top gross was £1093.50 for a Holstein Friesian from R&M Allison, Barnyard.

Prime Sheep

 

A bumper entry of 1873 easily handled and a pleasing trade. Top price of £130 was paid for a Texel Lamb from Messrs Beaty, Newton Field purchased by Mr M Lomax. Top pence per kilo of 262.5p was paid for a pair of Texel Lambs from RM&ER Jackson, Scalesmoor purchased by Wilson Butchers, Main Street, Egremont.

 

26 Pens of Lambs sold at £110 or more. Light Lambs remain good to sell. Today emphasis placed upon finish with fed lambs achieving a premium.

A good entry of Cast ewes with meat proving to be a fast trade. Top of £153 for a Texel ewe from James Hunter, Fieldside. Others to £145 for A Ashburner, Summerhill. Suffolk ewes averaged £104.43 to a top of £132 again from the super run from James Hunter, Fieldside. Fell ewes topped at £65 for Swaledales from AG&KF Nicholson, Swinside End.
