Saturday 28th November 2020- Mitchells Christmas Fat Show
The dust has settled on our Christmas Prime stock show and sale which we held on Saturday 28th November 2020.
Well what can be said, other than there was a terrific show of stock. Our judges for this noted sale were Mr Liam Broster, Brosters Farm Shop, Huddersfield whom travelled to judge the cattle section and Mr Stephen Dodsworth, DFAM, County Durham headed over to judge the sheep section. Judging commenced at 12.30pm with the cattle.
Class 1 was the Limousin Steers, with ten forward first prize was awarded to McGowan and Hopwood with a super smart animal weighing 572kg. This being sold later of 300ppk to Pearson Wholesale Butchers.
Class 2 was the Limousin Heifer section, with 56 animals forward the decision was made to split the class into three:- Heavy, Medium and Lights. The heavy class was judged first with some wonderful sorts; first prize was awarded to Lot 25 for JJ Crichton, Loughrigg weighing 650kg and making 440ppk purchased by Haighs, Workington Ltd.

Class 8 was the Native Breed Steer with some outstanding traditional meat on show, first prize was awarded to Lot 95 for a Belted Galloway shown by JJ Crichton, Loughrigg weighing 608kg making 298ppk selling to Tony Harrison Butchers, Cockermouth.
Class 9 was the Native Breed Heifers. First prize was Lot 96 a pure bred Galloway which weighed 472kg, it was later knocked down for 188ppk to Low House Meats.
With classes all judged, we then had a line up of all first prize winners. Well what an advertisement for the British Farmers and Cockermouth Auction Mart. One of many was well worthy of winning any show but a champion had to be given on Saturday. Liam took his time and was complimentary on all of the animal in front of him.
The championship was awarded to Lot 12 (medium Limousin heifer class) shown by JA Barnett, Brinns Farm, she later went on to make 570ppk grossing £3363 and purchased by father and son team Tucker and Ian Brown from Browns Quality Meats, Dimond Building, Ulverston. JA Barnett received the Mitchells Silver Challenge Cup.
Reserve honours was closely followed by Lot 52 (heavy Limousin heifer class) from JJ Crichton, Loughrigg she made 440ppk grossing £2860 and was purchased by David Pearson, Haighs Workington. Also receiving the Mr&Mrs Peter Greenhill Trophy.
Top price on the day per head was £3518.20 for the first prize Charolais Heifer from the Bindloss Family, Shap. The heifer was born and bred at Shap and was very well looked after by Isacc Bindloss, she was purchased by Wilson Family Butchers, Corby Hill. She also recived the BCCS rosette and plaque.
All in all, the sale was a huge success with prices very strong and fitting for vendors and purchasers.
I take this opportunity to thank everyone whom supported on both sides of the ring.
