On Wednesday 2nd December 2020 Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock with 38 cattle comprising 28 cull cattle and 10 prime bulls and clean cattle, 1866 prime sheep including 1541 lambs and 325 cast ewes and rams.

Leading the sale in price per kilo and per head was a smart Limousin bull from TA Byers, Ellenbank selling for 224 pence and achieving £1552.32 purchased by Les Fell.

Prime Bull (Top price per head - £):-  Limousin – 1552.32, 1511.25 Ellenbank, 1403.44, 1260.80 Oughterside Mill.  British Blue – 1394, 1247.73 Oughterside Mill.   

Prime Steer (Top price per kilo – pence):-  Aberdeen Angus – 197 Sneckyeat Farm.  Beef Shorthorn – 190 Sneckyeat Farm.

Prime Steer (Top price per head - £):-  Beef Shorthorn – 1246.40 Sneckyeat Farm.  Aberdeen Angus – 1246.40 Sneckyeat Farm.

Fewer cows forward but trade no less topping at 153p for a Limousin from J Brown & Sons, Crakeplace Hall. Top gross was £1033.60 for a Simmental from AJ Wood, Woodhall Brow with Blues from the same good home at £1017.80. Black and Whites topped at 127p twice, both times for Friesians from W&EV Walker, Newbiggin who took top gross at £955.04.

Prime Sheep

All classes in extreme demand with premium prices being achieved. The days top price of £136 was paid for Texel Lambs from Messrs Fraser, High Flatts purchased by Tony Harrison, Butcher, Main Street, Cockermouth. Beltex Lambs from JW&VI Naylor, Hill Green sold to £134 and £131 this pen purchased by W Lindsay & Sons Butchers, Station Street, Cockermouth. AG&KF Nicholson, Swinside End also sold Texels to £131 for 46kg (284.8ppk).

Top pence per kilo was 287.9p for Beltex from I Powley, Green Marsh.

Mule lambs were a roaring trade topping at £108 twice; for a pen from P&PI Walker, Beechcroft and another pen from A&D Smith, Kelmore Hills. Top per kilo was for 46kg from A&D Smith, Kelmore Hills making £98.50 or 214.1p.

A show consisting almost entirely of fell ewes sold to a cracking trade topping at £130 for a Texel ewe from KA&R Campbell, Shepherds Hotel. Fell ewes topped at £66 for a pen of Swaledales from JE&A Wilson, Far End, Bootle. This good run of Swaledale and Herdwick ewes averaged an impressive £60.62.
