On Wednesday 9th December 2020 Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock with 33 cattle comprising 29 cull cattle and 4 prime bulls and clean cattle, 2070 prime sheep including 1679 lambs and 391 cast ewes and rams.

A smaller entry of cattle with trade a shade stronger. Clean Cattle topped at 240p for a Limousin Steer from J Brown & Son, Crakeplace Hall purchased by Wilson Willis Butcher, Cleator Moor.

Prime Steer (Top price per kilo – pence):-  Limousin – 240 Crakeplace Hall.

Prime Steer (Top price per head - £):- Limousin – 1512 Crakeplace Hall.

Prime Bull (Top price per kilo – pence):- Limousin – 207, 196 Ellenbank.  British Blue – 194 Hunday Farm.

Prime Bull (Top price per head - £):-  Limousin – 1538.60, 1449 Ellenbank.  British Blue – 1288.16 Hunday Farm.

Top priced cow came from Messrs JJ Fell, Stanger Hill with a great Limousin at 165p or £1049.40. The days top gross was £1099.68 for a Holstein Friesian from R&M Allison, Barnyard.

Prime Sheep

Lambs again a marvellous trade delighting vendors. It being the season of goodwill, the Cottam Family of Wardwarrow Farm, Holmrook very generously donated a Texel Lamb to be sold in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association. This lamb was sold for the days top price £150 purchased by Mr Phil Burton on behalf of West Scottish Lamb.

Messrs Nevinson, High House sold a cracking Texel lamb for £141 to Tony Harrison Butcher, Main St, Cockermouth.  Beltex lambs from Messrs Richardson, Low Garth sold for £138 and £136 both lots purchased by Haighs Butchers, Pow St, Workington.

Top pence per kilo was 315p for Beltex lambs from Messrs I Powley, Green Marsh.

Messrs Nevinson, High House averaged a staggering £122.63.

Meesrs I Powley, Green Marsh averaged £115.73.

A large entry of Mule lambs forward topped at £105.50 from P&PI Walker, Beechcroft. Top per kilo for Mules was 216.3p achieved by Messrs Richardson, Low Garth.

Fell lambs again coming forward in numbers upto £85 for Swaledales from P&PI Walker, Beechcroft and £85 for Herdwicks from Messrs Eilbeck, Plumbland.

Ewes a super trade with a handful of proper Texel ewes forward for the first time in many weeks. These topped at £160 twice, both times for Texels from Tallentire Hill Farm who sold others to £156. Mules to £88 from CP Nixon, Seafield House. Fell ewes good to sell upto £62 for a ring full of Herdwicks from P Edmondson, Seathwaite. Swaledales topped at £61 for a pen from J Pattinson & Son, Uldale Hall.  Many more could have been well sold.
