On Wednesday 16th December 2020 Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock with 57 cattle comprising 39 cull cattle and 18 prime bulls and clean cattle, 2168 prime sheep including 1855 lambs and 313 cast ewes and rams.

Prime bulls easily sold with keen demand present. Top of 219p or £1594.32 for a Limousin from TA Byers, Ellenbank.

Cows topped at 160p for a British Blue from W Gray & Sons, East Mill, Aspatria. Top gross was £1137 for a Limousin from Messrs P&PI Walker, Beechcroft. Dairy types topped at 128p for a Swedish Red from J Jackson & Son, Frizington Parks. Top gross £990.60 for a British Friesian from M Irving & Son, Weary Hall.

Prime Sheep

Prime sheep sold to a strong trade defying those that forecasted deductions and leaving vendors delighted.

Top price of £141 was paid for a Texel lamb from A&D Smith, Kelmore Hills, Workington purchased by Tony Harrison, Butcher, Main St, Cockermouth. Another lamb again from A&D Smith also sold to Tony Harrison Butchers this time for £139. £135 was paid for a Texel Lamb from Messrs Fraser, High Flatts purchased by Wilson Willis Butchers, Cleator Moor.

The days top per kilo was 305.6p for Beltex Lambs from I Powley, Green Marsh, Carlisle. This run of quality lambs averaged an amazing 287.95ppk or £110.77.

Fell lambs again in keen demand with a run of well fed Herdwick Lambs from WS Jackson, Nook Farm topping at 213.2p (34kg £72.50); this great run of 118 lambs averaged an impressive 210.68p.

Swaledale lambs sold to £80.50 from G&A Crayston, Thornholme.

I Powley, Green Marsh sold 11 lambs to average 287.95ppk or £110.77.

A&D Smith, Kelmore Hills sold 18 lambs to average £108.67.

A much improved entry in terms of quality with many heavy ewes achieving premium prices. Trade was superb throughout.

Top price of £157 for Texel ewes from R Percival, Risehow Farm, Flimby. Other Texels to £155 also from the same good home of Messrs Percival. WW&D Boow, Corney Hall sold Texel ewes to £150. Texel ewes averaged an impressive £115.54.

Fell ewes topped at £64 for a pen full of Swaledales from J Pattinson & Son, Uldale Hall. Swaledale ewes averaged a staggering £56.88.

Cast tups topped at £154 for a Bluefaced Leicester from GD Strawson, Muncaster Head, Eskdale.

Many more ewes could have been well sold and are required.
