On Wednesday 17th March, 2021 Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock with 38 cattle comprising 35 cull cattle and 3 prime bulls and clean cattle, 1058 prime sheep including 890 hoggs and 168 cast ewes and rams.

 

Cast cow trade is on fire with all classes in extreme demand. The days top price of 185p was paid for a Limousin Cow from W Gray & Sons, East Mill, Aspatria. Top gross of £1472.64 was achieved for a Limousin Cow from DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton whose trailer load of fed cows averaged an impressive £1275. Black and Whites topped at 154p for a British Friesian from J Pattinson & Son, Uldale Hall, Wigton. Top gross for black and whites was £1208.70 for a Holstein Friesian from CW&DE Bushby, Watson Hill, St Bees whose trailer load averaged £1066.29.

 

Cow prices are fantastic and vendors are encouraged to take advantage of the superb returns being achieved.

Prime Sheep

 

Hogg trade continuing to rock and roll up to a top of £176.50 for a Texel hogg from Messrs Richardson, Low Garth, Bewaldeth purchased by W Lindsay & Sons Butchers, Station St, Cockermouth. Others to £175.50 from A& D Smith, Kelmore Hills, Distington purchased by Tony Harrison Butchers, Main St, Cockermouth.

 

Top pence per kilo was 371.6p for Beltex hoggs from Messrs I Powley, Green Marsh, Carlisle. 

 

A lack of flesh forward was apparent with well fed hoggs commanding a premium.

 

Mule hoggs sold to £135.50 for a pen full from BW Hewitson, Shatton Lodge, Cockermouth and also for A&D Smith, Kelmore Hills, Distington.

 

Fell hoggs came forward again in large numbers accounting for 70% of the sale. Top of £111.50 on 3 occasions for Herdwicks from P Edmondson, Seathwaite, Borrowdale; Messrs Bland, Clea Hall, Wigton and J&E Nichol, Whinnerah. Top per kilo was 295.8p (36kg £106.50) from P Bland & J Barnes, Knott Houses, Grasmere.

A lack of numbers and quality forward however Cast ewes a very useful trade especially for good meated types. Top of £162 for a Texel ewe from GN Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton. Fell ewes topped at £73 for a pen of Swaledales from DW&AS Noble, Burblethwaite, Caldbeck. Many more could have been well sold with returns tremendous.
