On Wednesday 24 March 2021 Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock with 56 cattle comprising 37 cull cattle and 19 prime bulls and clean cattle, 1874 prime sheep including 1401 hoggs and 473 cast ewes and rams.

The Easter Show of Prime Cattle was well supported by vendors and ably judged by regular supporter Mr Andrew Willis of Wilson Willis Butchers, Cleator Moor. After some deliberation he awarded the championship rosette to Messrs Bowe, Hunday Farm, Workington with their Limousin Heifer which sold for 282p or £1793.52 purchased by Mr George Chapman. Reserve honours went to Messrs Miller, Allerby Hall, Aspatria with a Limousin Heifer which sold for 270p or £1458 purchased by the judge.

Bulls were a super trade with all classes in keen demand. Top price of 241p was paid for a Limousin Bull from TA Byers, Ellenbank, Boltongate. Top gross was £1546.33 for a British Blue from Bowness Farms, Threapland Lees, Aspatria.

Cows again a marvellous trade topping at 187p or £1387.54 for a Limousin from Messrs Miller, Allerby Hall, Aspatria. Dairy types sold to 173p for an OTM Heifer from Donaldson’s Dairy, Threapthwaite, Cleator. Top gross was £1196.46 for a British Friesian from Messrs Clark, Fairladies Farm, St Bees.

Prime Sheep

Today saw the Easter Show of Prime Hoggs and with a quality entry forward trade certainly did not disappoint.

The pre sale show was expertly judged by weekly buyer David Walker.  Champion pair of Hoggs came from A&D Smith, Kelmore Hills, Workington with a super pair of 55kg Texels which sold for £205 to grand supporters of the mart, W Lindsay & Sons Butchers, Station St, Cockermouth.

Reserve honours went to WS Jackson, Nook Farm, Borrowdale with a pair of cracking 55kg Beltex again purchased by W Lindsay & Sons Butchers.

Outwith the show pence per kilo honours went to I Powley, Green Marsh, Carlisle with Beltex hoggs selling for 388.5p. A Beltex hogg from Messrs Richardson, Low Garth was kindly donated to the British Lung Foundation and sold for £200 purchased by Mr Jimmy Blenkhorn.

Fell hoggs came forward in droves topping at £123.50 for Herdwicks from WS Jackson, Nook Farm, Borrowdale and 296.1p for Herdwicks from J&SD Hope, Orthwaite Hall.

A much improved entry of Cast ewes sold to a superb trade delighting vendors. Top price of £188 was paid for 3 Texel ewes from FA&J Stockdale, Crosshow Farm, Dearham whose pen of 6 averaged an impressive £174. Charollais ewes from DJ Lister, Woodend, Irton sold to £180 whilst Beltex ewes from Messrs Knight, Stephney, Calderbridge sold to £152. Texel Rams sold to £152 from GS&B Barwise, Bell House, Whitehaven who also topped the fell ewe section with Swaledales at £79.
