Friday 14th May 2021 Breeding show & sale of hoggs & lambs and breeding cattle

A pleasing entry of 1245 ewes and hoggs with lambs at foot assembled for the David Westgarth sale. The show was kindly sponsored by Massey Feeds. Judging was in the capable hands of Mr Thomas Hird, Westray. We thank Tom for his time and expertise. After some deliberation Thomas awarded the David Westgarth trophy for Champion pen of 5 Hoggs with Lambs to Messrs Winter, Clickham Farm, Appleby. This pen was later sold for £135 per life purchased by the judge. Reserve honours also went to Messrs Winter with a pen of TexelXSuffolk hoggs which sold for £152 a head.

A flying trade was witnessed with an abundance of buyers present for all classes.

The days top price of £160 was paid for a pen of 5 Mule hoggs with Lambs at foot again from Messrs Winter, Clickham purchased by Messrs Brough.

Ewes with Lambs at foot topped at £124 for a Texel ewe with single Beltex lambs from I&G Lister, New Monkwray, Whitehaven. Ewes with Twins sold to £98 or £294 per outfit for Texels from J&E Nichol, Whinnerah, Gosforth.

A large entry of fell ewes topped at £100 per life for a Welsh Ewe with single Beltex lamb at foot sold by GW Whitfield & Son, Low Stowbank, Ennerdale with the proceeds being donated to the Great North Air Ambulance. This generous donation was kindly purchased by Mr Alan Edmondson.

Herdwick ewes topped at £57 per life for correct ewes with single Charollais lambs from R&A Maxwell, Howside, Ennerdale. Ewes with twins sold to £53 or £159 per family from Messrs Folder, Wescoe Farm, Threlkeld.

Next sale for ewes and lambs is next week, Friday 21st May; with a catalogued entry of 150 outfits forward so far, un-entered ewes and lambs are invited.

The special sale of beef breeding cattle went off with a bang. Trade was electric with many more required to satisfy extreme demand.

The days top price was achieved by an outstanding pedigree Limousin Heifer with pedigree heifer Calf at foot from DJ&MJ Hoggarth, Old Hall Farm, Broughton-in-Furness. Attracting admirers from all parts, this heifer sired by Fieldson Indigo with her Proctors Nissan calf raced away to sell for £3700 purchased by Mr Steven Wilson, Carlisle.  

Others sold to £2250 for a Beef Shorthorn Heifer with British Blue calf from the dispersal of GS&B Barwise, Bell House, Whitehaven. And also £2250 for a Beef Shorthorn 3rd calved cow with Charolais calf from Mosser Mains Farm, Mosser.

Bulling Heifers topped at £1400 for a British Blue X Friesian from Messrs Greening Ltd, Waverbank, Wigton. Yearling pedigree Beef Shorthorn heifers sold to £1040 for a pair from Woodhow Farm, Wasdale.
