On Wednesday 19th May 2021 Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock with 54 cattle comprising 34 cull cattle and 20 prime bulls and clean cattle, 638 prime sheep including 216 lambs, 234 hoggs and 188 cast ewes and rams.

Prime cattle continuing to be buoyant selling to £1414 for a British Blue heifer from H Thompson, Springfield Farm, Bigrigg. Bulls sold to £1327.04 from D&MA Wilson, Lamplugh Hall for a Limousin. Black and white bulls again from D&MA Wilson sold to £1283.40 whilst Friesians from WE&DE Litt, Greengill, Gilcrux sold to 205p.

The cow trade just keeps on giving producing fantastic returns. Top of 194p for a Limousin from JN&A Woodend, Hyton Farm, Bootle. The same good home of Messrs JN&A Woodend also sold British Blues to 191p whilst MJ&JE Graham, Lynedraw, Ireby sold a Limousin to 185p. Top gross was £1408.22 for a Limousin from CJ Hartley, Stoney Howe, Drigg. Blues sold to £1325.12 from JA Ritson, Baggra Yeat, Uldale.

Black and whites topped at 184p for a Holstein Friesian Heifer from WW&D Boow, Corney Hall, Bootle. Top gross was £1304.16 for a 7 year old Holstein Friesian cow from W Sharpe, Woodend, Lamplugh.

Prime Sheep

The heat was turned back up on the sheep trade with all classes dearer this week.

Lambs topped at £185.50 for Texels from JD Hetherington & Son, Blue Dial, Allonby purchased by Tony Harrison, Butcher, Main St, Cockermouth. JD Hetherington & Son also sold Suffolks to £180.50 purchased by W Lindsay & Sons, Butcher, Station St, Cockermouth.

Top per kilo was 366.3p for Texels from L Skelton & Son, Low House, Dearham purchased by W Lindsay & Sons Butchers.  

More lambs required as orders for lambs increase week on week due to fact that hoggs are drying up.

Prime hoggs still in demand with lightweights dearer. Top of £142.50 twice; firstly for Messrs Hodgson, Croft End, Beckermet and then again for P Hartley, Row Brow Park, Dearham. Top per kilo 285.7p for Texels from Messrs Matterson, Stonecroft, Bootle.

A ring full of 31kg Herdwick hoggs from TJ Postlethwaite, Hollin Head, Eskdale sold to £86.50 or 279pp.

All classes of ewes sold dearer on the week. Top of £160 for Texel ewes from G Butler, Moor Platt, St. Bees. Others to £156 for Texels from WW&D Boow, Corney Hall, Bootle and also for Charollais from JE&A Wilson, Far End, Bootle. Fell ewes topped at £96 for Herdwicks from W&S Brownrigg, Millbeck Hall, Keswick.

Many more could have been well sold and are required next week.
