On Wednesday 26th May 2021 Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock with 77 cattle comprising 61 cull cattle and 16 prime bulls and clean cattle, 638 prime sheep including 276 spring lambs, 179 hoggs and 183 cast ewes and rams.

Bulls topped at 211p for a Limousin from J Pattinson, Uldale Hall, Uldale. Top gross was £1288.20 for a Limousin from D&MA Wilson, Lamplugh Hall who also sold Holstein Friesian Bulls to 186p or £1207.80.

A larger entry again sold to a wonderful trade. Top of 200p for a British Blue from J&E Scott, Mid Farm, Torpenhow. Limousins sold to 189p for N Race, Penny Hill, Eskdale. Top gross was £1391.04 for a British Blue from P&PI Walker, Beechcroft, Mockerkin whilst J&E Scott achieved £1330 for the afore mentioned cow. Limousins to £1266.72 for W Gray & Sons, East Mill, Aspatria.

Black and Whites topped at 164p for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs J Sewell, Mayfield, Greysouthen. Top gross was £1174.78 for a Holstein Friesian from A&L Gott, Prospect House, Isel whose trailer load averaged an impressive £1166.62.

Phwoar! The prices speak for themselves as trade reached previously unseen levels.

The top price of £201.50 was achieved twice, both times for Texel lambs from the outstanding consignment of Mr A Mawson, Bridgewater, Bootle purchased by Mr P Burton and W Lindsay & Sons, Butchers, Station St, Cockermouth respectively. Top per kilo also went to Mr A Mawson with Texel lambs selling for 420.7ppk purchased by Mr G Harryman.

A Mawson, Bridgewater sold 15 to average 382.03ppk or £189.23

Hogg trade coming to an end but still pleasing prices topping at £149 for a Cheviot from Messrs Richardson, Fold Head, Borrowdale purchased by Mr A Lennox. Top per kilo was 301.7p for a pen of TexelxHerdwicks from weekly consignor Messrs Matterson, Stonecroft, Bootle again purchased by Mr A Lennox.

A quality entry sold to a supersonic trade proving that given the goods we can get the results. Ewes topped at a staggering £206 for a Texel from A Mawson, Bridgewater, Bootle whose run of Texels and Suffolks averaged £187.

Other Texels to £195 from WW&D Boow, Corney Hall, Bootle whose trailer load of ewes averaged an impressive £144.

Fell ewes topped at £92 for Rough Fells from AD Shuttleworth, Ghyll Farm, Wasdale.

Many more could have been well sold and are required to satisfy increased buyer demand.
