On Wednesday 2nd June 2021 Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock with 41 cattle comprising 24 cull cattle and 17 prime bulls and clean cattle, 1134 prime sheep including 616 spring lambs, 131 hoggs and 387 cast ewes and rams.

Bulls topped at 211p for a Limousin from RG&JM Smith, Lake View, Keswick. Top gross was £1387.36 for a British Blue from A&C Park, Sea View, St.Bees.

A small show of Cows but an electrifying trade. Top of 189p on three occasions; firstly for a British Blue from JN&A Woodend, Hyton Farm, Bootle, and then again twice, for a British Blue and a Limousin both from RW&JH Emmott, Wythop Hall, Cockermouth. Top gross was £1426.81 for a Limousin from P&PI Walker, Beechcroft, Mockerkin. Black and Whites to £1238.77 for a Holstein from Crooklands Farm, Blencogo, Wigton.

Prime Sheep

Today saw the June Single Spring Lamb show kindly sponsored by Tynedale4Tags. Judging was in the capable hands of Mr Tommy Bradley who after some deliberation awarded the Championship rosette to a Texel Lamb from Mr G Butler, Moor Platt, Egremont. This lamb weighing 47kg went on to top the sale at £220 purchased by Messrs Wilson, Butchers, Main Street, Egremont.

Reserve honours went to a 48kg Suffolk RM&ER Jackson, Scalesmoor, Lamplugh selling for £172 to Tony Harrison, Butcher, Main Street, Cockermouth.

Top pence per kilo was 468.1p for the Champion from G Butler, Moor Platt. Others to 416.7p from L Skelton & Son, Low House, Dearham.

Lambs were a superb trade being dearer on the week producing an average of 333ppk or £136.12. All classes keenly sought after with even lighter weight lambs producing fantastic returns.

A super show of cast ewes sold to a dazzling trade being as dear as ever witnessed. Top price of £210 was achieved for a Continental ewe from JJ Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont. This outstanding consignment of 18 ewes averaged a wonderful £179.17.

Texel ewes topped at £188 for a pair from Messrs Hodgson & Son, Croft End, Beckermet whilst Rouge ewes sold to £180 from A&C Park, Sea View, St. Bees.

Fell ewes topped at £104 for Herdwicks from A Branthwaite, The Oaks, Cockermouth.
