On Wednesday 21st July 2021 Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock with 30 cattle comprising 22 cull cattle and 8 prime bulls and clean cattle, 1144 prime sheep including 1049 spring lambs and 95 cast ewes and rams.

A run of well fed Friesian Bulls from WE&DE Litt, Greengill, Gilcrux topped at 194p twice or £1179.52 and averaged an impressive £1121.62.

Prime Bull (Top price per head - £):-  British Friesian – 1179.52, 1171.76, 1152.90, 1127.12, 1105.80 Greengill Farm.

The cast cow section was short in numbers but superb in trade. Top of 218p or £1519.46 for a Limousin Heifer from A&L Gott, Prospect House, Isel. A 33m old Angus Heifer sold to 210p or £1375.50 from B Mansergh, Sneckyeat, Cockermouth. British Blue cows to 175p or £1204 again from A&L Gott, Prospect House. Friesian cows topped at 151p also from Messrs Gott, Prospect House. Holstein Friesians to £1120 from R&M Allison, Barnyard, Greysouthen.

Many more could have been well sold and are required.

Prime Sheep

A scorching trade was witnessed with all classes every bit as dear as last weeks festival rates. No post -festival hangover as all vendors went away delighted with their returns and an overall sale average of 262p.

Top price of £155.50 for a 60kg Texel lamb from Bowness Farms, Threapland Lees, Aspatria purchased by Tony Harrison, Butcher, Main St, Cockermouth. Others to £146.50 from Frank Gate, Sally Hill, Gosforth purchased by W Lindsay & Son, Butcher, Station St, Cockermouth.

Top pence per kilo was 321.3p for a pen of 5 Beltex lambs from W Gray & Sons, East Mill, Aspatria purchased by John Gibson. Others to 311.3p for Beltex lambs from JA&CM Brown, Parkhouse, Isel. Texels sold to 303.6p from J&JK Spedding, Salter Hall, Frizington.  

A pen of 22 Mule lambs weighing 44kg from JA Ritson, Baggra Yeat, Uldale sold to £111.50 or 253.4ppk.

A very small entry of ewes forward as numbers burn out faster than the weather. However another grand trade being much dearer than pre sale expectations. Top of £126 for two pens of Texel X ewes from RW Carr, Croftside, Coulderton and again for Suffolk ewes from G Wilson, Aldoth, Wigton. More wanted next week
