On Wednesday 28th July 2021 Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock with 47 cattle comprising 31 cull cattle and 16 prime bulls and clean cattle, 1815 prime sheep including 1516 lambs and 299 cast ewes and rams.

Heifers sold to 222p or £1239.06 for a Limousin from Messrs Bowe, Hunday Farm, Workington. Bulls sold to 222p for a Limousin again from Messrs Bowe, Hunday. Top gross for Bulls was an Angus from A&C Park, Sea View, St. Bees achieving £1298.88. Black and Whites sold to 194p or £1166.22 for a Friesian from WE&DE Litt, Greengill, Gilcrux.

Prime Heifer (Top price per kilo – pence):-  Limousin – 222, 214 Hunday Farm.

Cow trade continues to be fantastic with a shortage of numbers about. Top of 210p (£1302) for an Angus from JB&ND Baines, Howes Farm, Eskdale. Messrs Baines also sold Limousin cows to 198p or £1128.60. The top gross was £1374.10 for a Blonde from WCG Holdings, Eirintalla, Ennerdale. Black and Whites sold to 160p for a Holstein Friesian from B Burrough, Waites Farm, Pardshaw. Holstein cows to £1073 from Donaldsons Dairy Ltd, Threapthwa

Prime Sheep

A larger entry of 1516 lambs sold to an average of 244ppk. Top price of £145.50 for a pair of Texels from JD Hetherington & Son, Blue Dial, Allonby purchased by Tony Harrison, Butcher, Main St, Cockermouth. Top price per kilo was 312.5p for Beltex lambs from Messrs Woodman, Spring Bank, St Bees.

Light lambs continue to look a strong trade with a ring full of Texel cross lambs weighing 33kg achieving £88.50 (268ppk) from CI Postlethwaite, Rainors Farm, Gosforth.

Messrs RB Jackson, Croft House sold a ring full of 54 Suffolk lambs weighing 43kg for £108.50 or 252.3ppk. 

The consignment of lambs from JD Hetherington & Son, Blue Dial averaged an impressive £129.10 for 49kg.

All classes sold much dearer on the week being £10-£15 up across the board. No real stars in but a top of £172 for a Suffolk Ram from A Mawson, Bridgewater, Bootle. Ewes to £141 for TexelX ewes from J&D Hodgson, Parsonage, Brigham. More could have been well sold.
