On Wednesday 1st September 2021 Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock with 32 cattle comprising 26 cull cattle and 6 prime bulls and clean cattle, 2269 prime sheep including 1640 spring lambs and 629 cast ewes and rams.

Prime heifers sold to 237p or £1232.40 for a Limousin from Messrs Teasdale, Lowside, Troutbeck. Bulls sold to 213p for a LimousinxFriesian from Messrs Bowe, Hunday, Workington.

Prime Heifer (Top price per kilo – pence):-  Limousin – 237, 233 Lowside Farm, 216 Hunday Farm.  

Prime Heifer (Top price per head - £):-  Limousin – 1232.40, 1137.04 Lowside Farm, 1216.08 Hunday Farm.  

Prime Bull (Top price per kilo – pence):-  Limousin – 213 Hunday Farm.  Holstein Friesian – 180, 177 Row Hall.    

Prime Bull (Top price per head - £):-  Limousin – 1252.44 Hunday Farm.  Holstein Friesian – 977.04 Row Hall.

Cast cows another whopping trade. No need to travel as returns match and surpass other outlets. Top of 228p for a British Blue cow from S Hardisty & Son, How Hall, Ennerdale. Top gross was another British Blue cow from the same good home of Messrs Hardisty amounting to £1559.80. This grand trailer load of cows averaged a staggering 210.87p or £1423.92.

Angus cows to 168p or £1370.88 from FA&J Stockdale, Crosshow.

Black and White cows topped at 174p for a Holstein Friesian from JR&JA Wharton, Segbushwell, Blackford. Top gross for Black and whites was £1172.80 from Wilson’s of Gate Farm, Uldale.

Prime Sheep

A good entry of 1640 lambs maintained recent high rates and a wonderful trade for the time of year averaging 243ppk. Top price of £168 was paid twice; firstly for a Texel Lamb from Messrs Fraser, High Flatts, Gilcrux purchased by Mr Phil Burton; and then again for another Texel lamb from Messrs Gate, Hollins, Eaglesfield purchased by T Harrison, Butcher, Main St, Cockermouth.

Top pence per kilo was 329.2p for Beltex lambs from JD Hetherington & Son, Blue Dial, Allonby purchased by W Lindsay & Sons, Butcher, Station St, Cockermouth.

Mule lambs sold to £106.50 for a pen of 47kg from JA Ritson, Baggra Yeat, Uldale.

A large entry of light lambs came forward being very good to sell. A pen full of Charollais lambs from JJ&C Hodgson, Stybeck Farm, Thirlmere weighing 33kg sold for £84.

Another good entry of ewes sold to a fast trade topping at £154 for a Texel from JW&VI Naylor, Hill Green, Drigg. Fell ewes topped at £82 for Herdwicks from JN&P Stanley, Ponsonby Old Hall, Calderbridge.
