On Wednesday 13th October, Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock with 90 cattle comprising 70 cull cattle and 20 prime bulls and clean cattle, 2367 prime sheep including 1833 lambs and 534 cast ewes and rams.

Prime cattle topped at 248p twice; both times for Limousins D&MA Wilson, Lamplugh Hall, Lamplugh. This good feeding home also sold the top gross of £1795.52. Black and White bulls topped at 196p for a Holstein Friesian from F Mattocks & Son, Row Hall, Maryport.

A large and weathered entry of cows. Quality types still sold to a premium to a top of 192p or £1497.60 for a Limousin from JP Lister, Oughterside Mill, Aspatria. Black and Whites sold to 140p twice; firstly for a Friesian from Messrs Irving, Weary Hall, Mealsgate (£1041.60) and then again for a Holstein from J Jackson & Son, Frizington Parks, Frizington.

Prime Sheep

A good entry of 1833 prime lambs sold to another strong trade producing great returns. Top price of £156 was paid twice; firstly for a Texel lamb from Messrs Fraser, High Flatts, Gilcrux purchased by Tony Harrison, Butcher, Main Street, Cockermouth. And then again for a pen of Texel lambs from TW Johnstone, Briary Bank, Bothel also purchased by Tony Harrison, Butcher. 

Top pence per kilo was 312.5p for Beltex lambs from JA&CM Brown, Parkhouse, Isel.

A large entry of Mule lambs topped at £107.50 twice; firstly for J Stobart, Howbeck Lodge, Hesket New Market and then again for BW Hewitson, Shatton Lodge, Cockermouth.

A larger entry of cast ewes maintained recent high rates. Top of £140 for a Texel ewe from G West, Stargill, Workington. Fell ewes topped at £77 for Herdwicks from Messrs Bland, Clea Hall, Wigton. Rams sold to £150 for a Texel from KA&R Campbell, Shepherd’s Hotel.
