On Wednesday 20th October 2021 Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock with 34 cattle comprising 26 cull cattle and 8 prime bulls and clean cattle, 2605 prime sheep including 1974 lambs and 631 cast ewes and rams.

Leading the sale in price per kilo and per head was a Limousin bull from J Pattinson & Son, Uldale Farm selling for 219 pence (£1384.08) to Thomas Fell.

A weathered show of cows was forward topping at 155p for a Blonde Cow from JP Lister, Oughterside Mill. Top gross was £1145.76 for a Simmental from NW Graham & Son, Tortolocate.

Prime Sheep

A large entry of 1974 lambs sold to another grand trade producing marvellous returns. Returns that wouldn’t even be considered any other late October! Top price of £159 was paid for a Texel lamb from Messrs Fraser, High Flatts purchased by Tony Harrison, Butcher, Main St, Cockermouth. The same good home sold others to £157 purchased by West Scottish Lamb Ltd. A lamb was offered for sale by WCG Holdings, Eirintalla with the proceeds being donated to RABI; this lamb made £155 being purchased by Yorkshire Halal. Beltex lambs to £155 from Messrs Crozier & Langcake, High Moss again purchased by Tony Harrison Butchers, Cockermouth.

Top pence per kilo was 341p for Beltex lambs from I Powley, Green Marsh purchased by West Scottish Lamb.

Lightweight lambs met a keen enquiry with Charollais lambs from JJ&C Hodgson, Stybeck weighing 33kg selling for £89.

A poor entry of cast ewes was present with many clean ups forward. However a good trade for the time of year topping at £106 for Texel X ewes from Messrs Palmer, Asby Hall. Fell ewes topped at £74 for a ring full of Herdwick wethers from P Edmondson, Seathwaite, Borrowdale.
