On Wednesday 10th November 2021 Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock with 54 cattle comprising 45 cull cattle and 9 prime bulls and clean cattle, 2161 prime sheep including 1550 lambs and 611 cast ewes and rams.

 

Prime cattle sold to a top price of 248ppk or £1592.16 for a Simmental Bull from TA Byers, Ellenbank, Boltongate.

 

Prime Steer (Top price per kilo – pence):-  Hereford- 204 Millstead.

Cows sold sharper on the week topping at 200p (£1336) for a 7 year old Limousin from D&MA Wilson, Lamplguh Hall, Lamplugh. British Blue cows sold to 194p or the top gross of £1474.40 from RE Miller, West Farm, Aspatria who also sold others to 186p or £1348.50. Black and whites sold to 178p or £1281.60 for an OTM Heifer from Messrs Wood, Allerby Mill, Aspatria. Messrs Clark, Fairladies, St. Bees sold an outstanding run of Friesian cows to top at 147p for a 4 year old.

 

More cows could have been well sold.

Prime Sheep

Prime lamb trade continues to be out of this world with rates surpassing all previous years. Top price of £177 was paid for a Beltex lamb from WW&D Boow, Corney Hall, Bootle purchased by W Lindsay & Sons, Butcher, Station Street, Cockermouth. Texel lambs topped at £175 from Messrs Fraser, High Flatts, Gilcrux purchased by Tony Harrison, Butcher, Main Street, Cockermouth. Others to £170 from JE&A Wilson, Far End, Bootle again purchased by Tony Harrison for his Cockermouth shop.

 

Top pence per kilo was 384.6p for Beltex lambs from I Powley, Green Marsh, Carlisle.

 

Mule lambs topped at £122.50 from BW Hewitson, Shatton Lodge, Cockermouth.

 

Lightweight lambs in keen demand with a pen of 32kg Charollais X lambs selling for £92 or 287.5ppk from JJ&C Hodgson, Stybeck, Thirlmere.

A good entry of ewes sold to a furious trade with new vendors taking advantage of the high rates being achieved. No need to look elsewhere with a top price of £215 for Texel ewes from Messrs Mounsey, Wardhall Guards, Aspatria. Other Texels to £202 and £195 from Tallentire Hill Farm. Mule ewes sold to £125 for a pen from GR&R Pinguey, High House, Kirkbride. Swaledales topped at £70 from JA Ritson, Baggra Yeat, Uldale.

 

All vendors went home delighted. Many more could have been well sold and are required each week.
