On Wednesday 15th December 2021 Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock with 64 cattle comprising 50 cull cattle and 14 prime bulls and clean cattle, 2381 prime sheep including 1743 lambs and 638 cast ewes and rams.

The Mitchells Christmas show and sale of Prime Bulls and Cast cows was professionally judged by Mr James Birbeck who after some deliberation awarded the Championship rosette to D&MA Wilson, Lamplugh Hall with a super Limousin Bull which later sold for the days top price of 280p. Reserve honours went to the 1st prized Continental Cast cow from RE Miller, West Farm, Aspatria which sold for 199p or £1508.24.

The top gross for bulls was £1872 for a Limousin from TA Byers, Ellenbank, Boltongate. Black and Whites sold to 211p or £1383.58 for the first prized Friesian from J Pattinson & Son, Uldale Hall, Uldale.

A great show forward upto a top gross of £1524.84 (197p) for a British Blue from RE Miller, West Farm, Aspatria. Limousins to 199p or £1508.24 for the afore mentioned 1st prized cow. Black and whites topped at 167p for a Holstein Friesian OTM Heifer from CR&RW Gott, Burton House, Isel. Top gross £1063.40 for a Holstein Friesian from R&M Allison, Barnyard, Greysouthen.

Prime Sheep

The Christmas commercial show and sale of prime lambs was ably judged by Mr James Birbeck. The championship rosette was awarded to the first prize pen of Texel lambs from Molly Nixon, Hundith Hill, Cockermouth which later sold for £173 for 54kg. Reserve honours went to Messrs Crozier & Langcake with their pen of 10 which sold for £135 for 41kg.

Outwith the show the days top price was £203 for Beltex lambs from AG&KF Nicholson, Swinside End, Lorton. Texels sold to £198 from Messrs Fraser, High Flatts, Gilcrux. Other Beltex lambs to £190 from M Stockdale, Crosshow, Dearham purchased by Tony Harrison, Butcher, Main Street, Cockermouth.

Fell lambs sold to £111 for the first prized pen of Swaledales from JA Ritson, Baggra Yeat, Uldale. Herdwicks sold to £107 for the first prized pen of Herdwick lambs from AG&KF Nicholson, Swinside End. Grass fed Herdwick lambs weighing 32kg from R&A Maxwell, Howside, Ennerdale sold to £85.50 or 267.2ppk.

A larger show of ewes were great to sell with all buyers keen for supplies. Top of £198 was paid for a Texel ewe from FA&J Stockdale, Crosshow, Dearham. Suffolk ewes to £147 from Messrs Fraser, High Flatts, Gilcrux. Fell ewes topped at £88 for Swaledales from J&CL Hickson, Beck Grange, Caldbeck whilst Herdwicks to £82 from L Skelton, Low House, Dearham. Cast tups upto £160 for a Texel from Messrs Cartmel, High Low Hall, Whitehaven.

More could have been well sold and are required weekly.
