Primestock 6th April 2022 including the Easter Show & Sale of prime hoggs

On Wednesday 6th April 2022 Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock with 71 cattle comprising 60 cull cattle and 11 prime bulls and clean cattle, 1661 prime sheep including 1368 hoggs and 293 cast ewes and rams.

Prime cattle sold to 244p for a Limousin x fri Bull from J Pattinson & Son, Uldale Hall, Uldale. Heifers to 241p for an Angus from B Mansergh, Sneckyeat, Mosser. British Friesian Bulls sold to 230p again from J Pattinson & Son, Uldale Hall.  

Prime Heifer (Top price per kilo – pence):- Angus- 241, 228 Sneckyeat. Limousin- 229 Oughterside Mill.   

Prime Heifer (Top price per head - £):- Angus- 1482.15, 1454.64 Sneckyeat. Limousin- 1378.58 Oughterside Mill.

Cows continue to be a whopping trade. Today we saw a centre record of 240p or £1929.60 achieved for a British Blue cow from P Edmondson, Seathwaite Farm, Borrowdale. Limousins to 212p from DA Harrison, Solway House, Wigton. Top gross for Limousins £1621.80 from G Gate, Hollins Farm, Eaglesfield. Simmental cows to £1638.78 again from DA Harrison, Solway House. Native cows to 207p or £1538.01 from TW Bell, Grange Farm, Redmain. Black and Whites topped at 199p or £1428.82 for a British Friesian from Wellington Farms, Aspatria. The same good home of Wellington Farm sold others to 193p.

Prime Sheep sale average 275.44ppk

Today saw the Easter Show and Sale of Prime hoggs sponsored by Mitchells Auction Co. and ably judged by Mr Andrew Graham. A pleasing entry was forward for judging and after some deliberation Andrew awarded the Champion rosette to the pair of Continental Hoggs from A&JM Forster, Weary Hall Style which later sold for the days top price of £252 purchased by David Walker on behalf of W Lindsay & Sons, Butcher, Station Street, Cockermouth. Reserve honours went to WS Jackson, Croft House later selling for £250 per head purchased by Tony Harrison, Butcher, Main Street, Cockermouth; with WS Jackson kindly donating the proceeds of these hoggs to the Ukraine Appeal.

The Stan Edmondson Memorial Cup for the best pen of Herdwick hoggs was presented to J Bland, Yew Tree Farm, Borrowdale which weighed 49kg and later sold for £123.

Out with the show light and export weight hoggs proved very good to sell attracting keen interest and increased rates. Heavy hoggs sold similar on the week. Top pence per kilo was 454.5p for the aforementioned pair of Beltex hoggs from WS Jackson, Croft House, Parsonby.

A bumper entry of Fell hoggs came forward selling to a storming good trade. Top of £124 for Blackface hoggs from WE&DE Litt, Greengill, Gilcrux whose run of 88 Blackies weighing 43.3kg averaged £122.76. Herdwicks sold to £123 for the aforementioned pen of 10 from J Bland, Yew Tree with others to £121 from T&MD Beaty, Langhorn, Bigrigg. Top pence per kilo was 293.1p for a pen of 35 Herdwicks weighing 36kg (£105.50) from M&GM Fox, Crosbythwaite, Ulpha.

All Beltex hoggs forward sold to average £161.81.

548 Herdwicks forward in todays sale averaged a staggering £105.94 for all sold.
