On Wednesday 7th September 2022 Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock with 83 cattle comprising 64 cull cattle, 16 prime bulls and 3 clean cattle, 1275 prime sheep including 917 lambs and 358 cast ewes and rams.

 

A good entry of prime cattle topped at 272ppk for a prime bull from P&PI Walker, Beechcroft, Mockerkin. Top gross was £1805.75 from Messrs Crowe, Hall Santon, Holmrook.

 

Prime Steer (Top price per kilo – pence):- Limousin – 239, 233 Hall Santon.

Prime Heifer (Top price per kilo – pence):- British Blue – 244 Lowca Cottage.

An increased entry of cows easily handled by our keen ringside of purchasers and another super trade delighting vendors. Top price of 250ppk for a Limousin cow from S Hardisty & Son, How Hall, Ennerdale. Top gross also came from S Hardisty & Son with a British Blue cow grossing £1718.64. The days top gross of £1874.58 was paid for a Limousin cast bull from JA Ritson, Baggra Yeat, Uldale.

 

Dairy types topped at 191p for a British Friesian from J Pattinson & Son, Uldale Hall, Uldale. Top gross was £1469.10 for a Holstein Friesian from Dundraw Farms, Wigton.   

 

S Hardisty & Son sold 4 cows to average a wonderful 235.6ppk.

 

All Limousin cows averaged 213.17ppk.

Prime Sheep

Fewer numbers forward due to standstills however a sharp trade providing strong returns. Top of £167 or 340.8ppk for a Beltex lamb from L Skelton & Son, Low House, Dearham purchased by Mr Phil Burton.

Texels to £166 from TW Johnstone, Briary Bank, Bothel purchased by Tony Harrison, Butcher, Main St, Cockermouth. The same good home sold others to £164.  

 

Mule lambs sold to £118 or 237.5ppk from P&PI Walker, Beechcroft, Mockerkin. Pure Herdwick lambs sold to £74 for 37kg from PY Gilbert, Skinner St, Cockermouth.
