The annual two-day sale of Herdwick breeding ewes and rams was held at Mitchells Auction Co, Cockermouth, Cumbria.
The Show was kindly sponsored by Hundith Hill Hotel, Marsh Commercial Insurance, TW Relph & Sons, and Robinson + co Accountants.
Judge for the females was Mr D Norman, Kirkhouse, who awarded the Championship rosette to the pen of Ewes from P Bland and J Barnes, Knott Houses, Grasmere which later sold for the days top price of £320. Reserve honours went to a pen of Shearlings from Messrs Bland, Clea Hall, Wigton which sold for £300.
A fantastic days trading was had by all concerned producing a wonderful sale average of £75 all in including Shearlings to Broken mouthed ewes.
Herdwick Gimmer lambs sold to top of £92 for a pen from CI Hartley, Barfield, Bootle.

An entry of 650 Cheviot and Continental breeding ewes sold to a keen ringside of buyers topping at £165 for a pen of Cheviot Shearlings from DJ Porter, Lindow End, Eskdale.

CHEVIOT & CONTINENTAL RAMS
The annual sale of Cheviot and Continental Rams sold to the best trade seen for many years with keen demand for powerful commercial tups. Top of £800 was paid twice; both times for Texel Shearlings from KG Holliday, Strudda Bank, Calderbridge. Cheviot Rams sold to £450 for a Shearling from AE&LK Harrison, Taw House, Eskdale.

Saturday 1st October – Keswick Fair of Herdwick Rams
Day 2 of the Herdwick sales kicked off with the judging which was in the capable hands of Mr Ian Grisedale and Mr Robert Tyson with Miss Margaret Wilson acting as referee. The Nicholson Trophy for Overall Champion was awarded to the 1st prized Aged Ram from M&J Potter, Ulcatrow, Matterdale which also received the Syd Hardisty Memorial Trophy. This tremendous tup bred by AJ&L Birkett, Birk Howe was first into the ring and sold for 10,000gns purchased by Mr F Brennand.
Outwith the Show a furious trade was witnessed spurred on by the previous days high rates. The top price of 15,000gns was achieved for a Shearling Ram from AG&KF Nicholson, Swinside End, Lorton purchased by Mr A Hartley. The next top price was 13,000gns again from the good stable of AG&KF Nicholson, Swinside End this time purchased jointly by Mr N Hardisty & Mr J Weir.
