On Wednesday 28th December Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock comprising of 2042 prime sheep including 1789 lambs and 253 cast ewes and rams.

 

Today saw the Christmas Show and Sale of Young Handlers Lambs kindly sponsored by Cars Billington Ltd and ably judged by renowned local stocksman and TV Personality Mr Peter Bland. A super show of lambs was putting forward by all the budding young stocks people and it looks like the future of the industry is in safe hands. After a thorough examination and a professional job the ‘Mitchells Auction Co Shield’ for Champion Young Handler was awarded to Amy Wilson of Undercragg, Mungrisedale with her Texel lamb which weighed 64kg and sold for £190 to Mr P Burton. Reserve honours went to Bella Peile of Parkgate Hall, Waverton with her 48kg Beltex lamb which later sold for £178 purchased by Tony Harrison, Butcher, Main Street, Cockermouth.

Outwith the show a strong trade was had being similar on the week. Top of £160 for a Texel lamb from K Hodgson, Parsonage Farm, Brigham purchased by W Lindsay & Sons, Butcher, Station Street, Cockermouth. Pence per kilo honours went to MJ Lawson, Pasture House, Bolton Low Houses with Texel lambs selling for 330ppk.

Cheviot Mule ewes to £129 from T&MD Beaty, Langhorn, Bigrigg. Fell ewes sold to £79 for a pen of 12 Swaledale ewes from P&PI Walker, Beechcroft, Mockerkin.
