Market Report for Wednesday 1st March 2023
On Wednesday 1st March 2023 Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock comprising of 44 cast cows and 75 prime cattle, 1313 prime sheep including 1095 prime hoggs and 218 cast ewes and rams.
The monthly Lake District Sale of Prime Cattle attracted new vendors and new buyers to take advantage of the fantastic rates achieved at this growing centre. All clean cattle sold averaged a mind boggling 300.76ppk.
Top price was 330p for a Limousin Heifer from JJ Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont purchased by Mr Morgan Helliwell. The top gross was another Limousin Heifer from the same noted home of JJ Crichton, Loughrigg grossing £2365.12 purchased by Mr Thomas Fell.
Steers sold to a top price of £2311.30 for a Limousin Steer from J Dixon & Sons, Lesson Hall, Wigton purchased by Mr Thomas Fell. Top per kilo was 318p for a Limousin Steer from RE Miller, West Farm, Aspatria purchased by Mr Bill Howard.

Again a marvellous trade for all classes of cows with trade showing no signs of slowing and being dearer still. Top price was a wonderful Limousin cow from JD&M Capstick, Fellside, Bootle achieving 267p or £2312.22 for a 5 year old cow. Two other Limousin cows achieved 250ppk from R Wilkinson & R Tenant, Gatesgarth, Buttermere and also from Messrs Miller, Allerby Hall, Allerby.
Black and white cows topped at a whopping 208p twice! Firstly for a British Friesian cow from JH Fell, Gutterby Farm, Millom and then again a Holstein Friesian from D&MA Wilson, Lamplugh Hall, Lamplugh which made the top gross of £1578.07.
The trailer load from JH Fell, Gutterby averaged 192.75p or £1429.75 whilst the air from D&MA Wilson, Lamplugh Hall averaged a wonderous 201.62ppk or £1488.96.
Limousin cows averaged 225ppk or £1614.89.
British Friesian cows averaged 184.13ppk or £1190.99.
Holstein Friesian cows averaged 171.94ppk or £1175.89.

Prime hoggs sold slightly dearer on the week. Top of £172 for Beltex hoggs from Messrs Richardson, Low Garth, Bewaldeth purchased by W Lindsay & Sons, Butcher, Station St, Cockermouth. Texel hoggs sold to £170 from T Trafford & Son, Peter House, Bassenthwaite again purchased by W Lindsay & Sons, Cockermouth.
Top per kilo was 357.9ppk for Beltex hoggs from I Powley, Green Marsh, Carlisle.
