Market Report for Wednesday 17th May 2023
On Wednesday 17th May 2023 Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock comprising of 174 comprising of 74 cast cows and 83 clean cattle and 17 prime bulls, 1176 prime sheep including 79 spring lambs, 842 prime hoggs and 255 cast ewes and rams.
The Lake District Sale of prime cattle attracted the largest entry yet with 100 going through the ring. Quantity and quality continues to attract more orders to this ring and a flying trad was achieved with all classes in keen demand and competition.
The days top of 348p was paid for a Limousin Heifer from Messrs JJ Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont purchased by Wilson Willis Butchers, High Street, Cleator Moor. JJ Crichton also sold Limousin Heifers to 346p which was the top gross for heifers at £2297.44.
Steers sold to a top of 330ppk for a Limousin from RE Miller, West Farm, Aspatria purchased by Mr Thomas Fell. Top gross for Steers was £2313.12 paid for a British Blue from Newbiggin Farms, Kirklinton.
Prime Bulls sold to 317p or £2258.15 for a Limousin again from the noted home of RE Miller, West Farm, Aspatria.

No let up in the cast cow ring as another bumper trade is enjoyed here at Cockermouth. Grabbing the headlines today a colossal British Blue Cast Bull from Scawfell Ltd, Bridge Petton, Gosforth selling for 272ppk or £3340.16.
Cows sold to 257p for a Limousin from I Powley, Green Marsh, Carlisle whilst others to 251p from Wilkinson & Tenant, Gatesgarth, Buttermere. Top gross was £2127.84 for a Limousin from Messrs Miller, Allerby Hall, Allerby.
Black and whites sold to 194p for a British Friesian from D&KI Clemetson, Outgang, Workington and 194p or top gross of £1581.10 for a Holstein Friesian from Greening Ltd, Kilndale, Mockerkin.
