On Wednesday 3rd April 2024, Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock with Cattle comprising of 36 Prime Cattle and cast cows; 1441 sheep including prime hoggs and cast ewes and rams.
Prime bulls sold to £2042.04 paid for a British Blue bull shown by P & PI Walker & Son, Beech Croft.
The top price per kg for bulls was 275p per kg for British Blue from AJ Wood, Woodhall Brow
Cows were dearer on the week and sold to 231p for British Blue from W Gray & Sons, East Mill, Aspatria and to £1634.43 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Carruthers, East Farm.

Prime Hoggs
Prime hoggs again took a massive lift on the week being far beyond everyone’s wildest dreams.
The top price was £272 paid for Beltex hoggs from S & D Peile, Parkgate Hall, Wigton and were purchased by West Scottish Lamb. This was closely followed at £270 paid for Blue Texel hogg from Jack Smith, Kelmore Hills purchased by regular weekly supporter Tony Harrison, Butcher, Main Street, Cockermouth. Pence per kg honours went to 509.10p per kg paid to TJ & EA Postlethwaite, Hollin Head, Boot for Texel hoggs.
Another huge entry of fell hoggs comprised 58% of the todays sale and sold to a top price of £200 for Herdwicks from EG Liddle, Miller Place. This breed also reached 400p per kg from G & T Tyson, East House.

All classes of ewes took a huge uplift on the week and sold to £260 per head for a pen of Texel ewes from I Fisher, Croft End, Frizington. Mule ewes topped at £168 for a pen of 13 from D & G Winder, Midtown, Plumbland and £168 from D Harrison, Holm Cottage, Beckermet.
52% of the ewe section sold comprised of Herdwicks, topping at £135 from TJ & EA Postlethwaite, Hollin Head and Swaledales to £136 from C & R Edmunds, Oaklands.
