On Wednesday 22nd May 2024, Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth held their weekly sale of primestock with 56 Cattle comprising of 36 Prime Cattle and 20 Cast Cows; 1136 Sheep including 126 Prime Lambs, 667 Prime Hoggs and 343 Cast Ewes and Rams.

 

A wonderful quality entry of prime cattle was forward for the monthly Lake District prime cattle sale, a real credit to all consignors. The cattle were presented to a good ring of wholesalers and butchers. The resulting trade was in line with expectations with the sellers going home satisfied.

 

Prime Cattle sale sold to a top price of 326ppk for a Limousin Heifer from

NE Dyson & Son, Gebdykes, Masham, purchased by Wilsonwillis Butchers, Cleator Moor. Top price per head of £2213.36 for a Limousin Steer also from NE Dyson & Son.

 

Prime Bulls sold to a top of 302ppk for an outstanding British Blue from Ms Harryman, Keskadale.

 

Cull cows were in short supply, many more could be sold to fulfil buying demand. The prices today were very pleasing, the demand continues to be good. The sale topped at £1631.16 for a Holstein Friesian from B Burrough, Waites Farm.

Prime lambs were forward in larger numbers, good quality butchers lambs were in demand and very good to sell, the prices for more commercial kinds followed the national trend, being a little easier in price.

Top price of the day was for an outstanding run of lambs from JJ Crichton, Loughrigg topping the sale £280.00 per head three time, also taking the top price per kilo 560ppk and purchased by local butcher and weekly supporter Haighs Butchers Workington. The overall sale average 383.02ppkg.

A mixed entry of prime hoggs were forward, good, fleshed sorts continued to command a premium.

With the top price being £235.00 per head for a pen of tremendous Texel hoggs from NE Dyson&Son, Gebdykes these were purchased by another loyal supporter T Harrison Butchers, Cockermouth.

Overall Sale average was 328.03ppkg.
