Market Report for Wednesday 14th August 2024
On Wednesday 14th August Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth, held their weekly sale of primestock with 35 Cattle comprising 7 Prime Cattle, 20 Cast Cows and 8 Bulls, 1115 sheep including 720 Prime Lambs and 395 cast ewes and rams.
Cattle continued to sell very well, maintaining the good prices of recent sales.
Top pence per kilo for cows was 216p per kg paid for a Limousin Cow shown by T Clemetson, Green Close, Bassenthwaite. The top gross for Cast cows £1684.00 paid for an Angus Cow from RB Jackson, Croft House, Papcastle which weighed 842 kgs and sold for 200p per kg.

Young beef bulls sold to 262p per kg paid for a Hereford cross shown by WE & DE Litt, Greengill, Gilcrux. The same vendor also took the top price per head of £1493.22 paid for a Holstein Friesian.

PRIME SHEEP
With other markets trade falling, the ewe trade at Mitchells held up very well throughout the sale with 12 active buyers in the ring. Lowland ewes averaged £140.39 per head and Fell ewes averaged £47.56 per head. Many more ewes could have been sold to fill buyers demands.
A good quality entry of lambs was forward to an active ring of buyers, the resulting trade was above expectations to a healthy average of 311.44ppk - this being above other markets averages.
The top price of £194 was paid for outstanding Texel lambs shown by WW & D Boow, Corney Hall, Corney, Millom. Pence per kg honours went to J & E Nichol, Whinnerah, Gosforth for Texel lambs selling at 389.8p per kg and these were purchased by local Family Butchers W Lindsay & Sons for their Station Street, Cockermouth.
