Breeding Ewes - Mule & Continental Shearlings

The annual show and sale of breeding ewes and gimmer shearlings saw a packed ring side of buyers both local and travelled, ensuring a strong trade was seen for well presented sheep. The first prize pen of shearlings from Mr T Hird, Westray was awarded the “Bill Skelton Memorial Trophy” this was presented by Bills grandson Ed Gate.

This pen of sheep went under the hammer at £330.00per head selling to Will and Ed Gate, Rook Farm.

The sale saw buyers keen for double vaccinated and strong shearlings, with these regularly selling £230.00 to £240.00.

The sale topped for the first prize pen of shearlings at £330.00 per head from T Hird, Westray, this impressive run of well farmed shearlings saw other pens sell for £260.00 and £255.00. The annual consignment of outstanding shearlings J&D Mattinson, Cragg Farm saw his best pens sell to £250.00 with other pens selling to the same price from JB Ackerly, Milton Mains.

Continental Shearlings saw plenty of interest with the best seeing texel sell to £270.00 per head form TI Bradley, Ghyll House. With a ring full of first cross texels from PT&SM Hewitson, Byresteads selling to £265.00 per head. With other pens of texels selling to £260.00 from Mr Owen Blackburn, Greenbank Close.

All breeding ewes were well sort after with the over all champion pen of mule ewes from J&D Mattison, Cragg Farm selling to £245.00 per head. With other pens of Mule ewes selling to £240.00 from MW Hewitson, Shatton Lodge.

A ring full of Mule ewes from PT&SM Hewitson, Byresteads Farm sold to £235.00 per head.

Texel ewes saw a top of £250.00 from TW Johnstone, Briary Bank who sold others to £240.00.

With a ring full of first cross Suffolks from T Trafford & Son, Peter House Farm selling to £225.00
