Market Report for Wednesday 9th October 2024

 

On Wednesday 9th October 2024, Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth, held their weekly sale of primestock with 64 Cattle, 1052 sheep including 732 prime lambs and 320 cast ewes and rams.

 

With a much larger show of cattle forward in the market today all classes met spirited competition and sold at prices in advance of vendors expectations.

Topping the cast cow section was a tremendous Limousin cow from Ms Watson, Lane Head Farm, Plumbland selling for 244ppk and £1981.28.

Prime cattle topped at £1873.88 and 316ppk for a Limousin Heifer again from Ms Watson, Lane Head Farm, Plumbland.

A similar show of prime ewes was forward. Well fleshed and meated ewes were once again in demand. Topping the ewe section was a whopper of a Texel ewe from W Fraser, High Flatts selling for £270.00, with many more ewes over £150.00.

A smaller entry of lambs was forward due to the massive breeding sales held at the weekend. Well fed and meaty lambs again commanded a premium and sold to £219.00 per head for a cracker of a Texel from W&E Gate, Rook Farm, bought by weekly and loyal supporter Tony Harrison Butcher, Main Street, Cockermouth.

Top price per kilo was 381.60 for a Beltex lamb from Ms Sharp, Holmecroft, Beckermet.

A noticeable margin between grass fed lambs and creep fed lambs was evident today.
