Market Report for Wednesday 19th February 2025
On Wednesday 19th February, Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth, held their weekly sale of primestock with 57 Cattle and 1816 sheep including 1425 prime hoggs and 391 cast ewes and rams.
A great show of 45 dairy/beef breed cull cows were forward.
Top price was awarded to a limousin bull by JD&M Capstick Ltd, Fellside Farm and PE&M Capstick, Whicham Hall which weighted 1017kg - £2.47.50ppk - £2517.08.
Next was a Blue cow from A Hartley which weighted 739kg - £2.87.50ppk - £2124.63.
A good Holstien cow off the Brough family Tallentire which topped the dairy side at £1943.07.
A lot of other cows around sold around the 1.80/2.10ppk.
More cows are wanted each week with a great ringside of buyers.

1475 Hoggs forward. Buyers showed keen interest for well fed hogg, some grass fed hoggs harder to place. A pleasing average of 332ppk was achieved with 800 hill bred hoggs forward.
Texel hoggs sold to £232 from Ms Harrington, Grange Gassings others to £229 from J Mounsey&Son, Beltex Hoggs sold to £226 from A&D Smith. Best bred hoggs sold to a top of 455ppk for Beltex’s from S&D Peile with 32 pens selling over the 400ppk mark.
Heavy Hoggs was in big demand, many selling well over the £200 mark. G Gate sold first cross Texel Hoggs to £218, first cross Suffolks sold to £201 from L McCarrick, Chorley with 7 pens from this good home selling at £200.
Light/Handy weight hoggs were a very sharp trade. A ring full of 40kg hoggs from Crozier & Langcake sold to £154.a pen of well fed Texel x Herdwick Hoggs at 39kg sold to £145 from P Edmondson & J Loan.
Hill bred hoggs saw Herdwicks sold to £159 from P Edmondson & J Loan. Mules sold to £157 from WE&DE Litt others to £156 from A&D Smith, well meated mules sold between 315ppk to 320ppk. A pen of 46kg Herdwick from W&PA Walton&Son sold to £153 (332ppk).
