Professional Valuations

Mitchells offer a full range of valuation services both informal verbal and formal written valuations.

If your aim is to sell an item or collection by auction, then we can provide free valuations for most items. Please visit our Selling page for more information

Aside from selling, we know that there are certain circumstances where a formal valuation for Inheritance Tax, Family Division or Insurance is required and we are able to assist.

Inheritance Tax

Working with both a variety of leading regional solicitors as well as executors independently, we offer comprehensive and efficient valuation services ranging from single items to specialist collections or house contents.

We conduct several hundred such valuations throughout the year and are skilled at providing the information you need in a useful format, with empathy, tact, and the minimum of fuss.

We understand that these valuations are required in often emotionally and logistically difficult circumstances, but you can rely on us to provide a comprehensive and professional service.

Valuations are presented in a printed format, with PDF and illustrated copies available if required.

Fees for these services are charged at an hourly rate of £200 + VAT per hour, up to a daily limit of £700 + VAT.  We do not charge a percentage of the overall valuation total, as we understand this can often end up costing the client more than charging purely on a time/cost basis.

We also offer a remote video valuation should access be limited/unavailable (such as in the case of Covid-19)

Once probate has been granted, we are also able to assist with house clearance and sales.

We recognise the complexities that can exist for Trustees and Executors when administering an estate and our experience allows us to complement and assist the work of an Executor. We provide a prompt, professional and confidential service and can arrange for valuation, storage and sale of single items or the clearance of complete house contents.

The key points of our service are:

  • A quick response
  • Identification of specific bequests
  • To provide advice regarding insurance cover
  • Security – namely removal of valuable items to our Redcare alarmed town centre premises
  • Full house clearance service
  • Prompt sale and payment usually within two weeks of sale

Insurance

In today’s uncertain world, it is sensible to be properly insured – and to have the right cover for your valuable assets, should the worst happen. At the same time, it is also sensible to have the correct level of cover: the art and antiques market fluctuates, like other markets, and there is no need to pay for cover that you don’t actually need. This is where Mitchells can help. Offering a comprehensive and efficient valuation service for insurance purposes, we can produce a formal document to present to your Insurance company, with valuations ranging from single items to specialist collections or house contents.

We can either arrange to attend your property, or you can bring the item(s) into our Saleroom in order for us to conduct a valuation.

Such a valuation can help avoid the stress and upset caused by disputes with loss adjusters. A regularly reviewed valuation may help reduce insurance premiums and facilitate the speedy settlement of a claim. Mitchells recommends that insurance valuations are updated every eight years or so due to changing market prices.
