A George III mahogany china table or cabinet in the manner of William Linnell, circa 1760, having a spindled gallery above a bowfront and open aperture flanked on either side by two cupboard doors, with open shelf beneath and raised on short feet. Height 37 ins, width 39.5 ins, depth 18.5 ins. The form of this "china table" relates closely to the Japanned Furniture supplied by William Linnell to The Duke of Beaufort for the Chinese Bedroom at Badminton House, Gloucestershire. Linnell is also credited with the black and gilt Japanned cabinet made for Sir Nathaniel Curzon, Vt. and Late Lord Scarsdale for Kedleston Hall and illustrated in H. Hayward and P. Kirkham, William & John Linell, London, 1980, Volume 2, P. 113, 219. An almost identical piece from the Collection of The Earles of Dysart at Ham House is illustrated by Percy Macquoid and Ralph Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, 1st Edition, Volume 1, page 167, figure 35 which was subsequently sold at Sotheby's, London, A Collection of English Furniture, Barometers and Clocks Formed by a Gentleman Residing in New York, 27-28 June 1974, lot 26 (see illustration).
