An important 16th century stump work bible cover, reputedly once in the possession of Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, finely worked in coloured threads depicting The Crucifixion within border, comprised of raised geometric and coloured motifs with red guard stripes worded in Latin. 30 cm x 27 cm, contained in stained wood glazed case, together with plaque worded "Bible cover owned by Mary Stuart Queen of Scots and given by her mother to Lady Elizabeth Stuart later Countess of Arundel and Surrey who gave it to her son Charles Howard of Greystoke". The bible cover has similar words inked to the reverse. All sold together with a facsimile warrant for the execution of Mary Queen of Scots. 38 cm x 49 cm in glazed oak double sided frame (see illustration).
