Lawrence Stephen Lowry RA (British 1887-1976) and Reverend Geoffrey S Bennett (1902-1991), an oil on board Rockcliffe Church Near Carlisle, signed to the bottom left GS Bennett and LS Lowry 1964. 39 x 24 cm, framed. NOTE: Reverend Bennett worked in banks in Whitehaven, Maryport and Cleator Moor and met LS Lowry through a love of painting and the two became friends, Lowry stayed with the Reverend Bennett and his wife in Cleator Moor. Reverend Bennett was ordained minister at Rockcliffe Near Carlisle in 1962 and this picture was painted by both men, the church and trees being painted by Geoffrey Bennett and the figures below painted by LS Lowry. After Reverend Bennett's death his collection of 14 Lowry oil paintings was sold at Christies auction in March 1995. This lot is sold with a Bonhams insurance valuation and original Christies auction catalogue from March 1995 (see illustration). ARR
