Sir Matthew Smith CBE (1879-1959), oil on canvas still life with clay head, initialled bottom centre, with partial label to rear No. 921 titled "Still Life with ........." dated 1937, the canvas marked to the rear 1939 and No. 5, with Bourlet framers label.  Provenance:  Purchased from Piano Nobile London November 1999, which also states Arthur Tooth & Sons 1937 and Thomas Agnew & Son Contemporary Exhibition 1939.  Sir Matthew Smith CBE was a British painter of nudes, still life and landscape, he studied design at The Manchester School of Art and The Slade School of Art.  Smith studied under Henry Matisse in Paris and acquired an interest in Fauvism.  During World War One he was wounded at The Battle of Passchendaele.  In 1949 Smith was appointed a Commander of The Order of The British Empire CBE, he was knighted in 1954. The painting is listed in John Gledhill's catalogue raisonne page 198 No 502 and comes with a copy of the book.  73 x 50 cm, framed. ARR.
