A finely carved shell cameo gold coloured brooch, dedicated to Fallen Heroes. As a Goddess of War Minerva is shown here as the Guardian of Fallen Heroes. A common attribute of Minerva is the owl and being a nocturnal creature the owl symbolises sleep or rest when shown with stars or a crescent moon. The dove and olive branch symbolise peace hence in the language of symbols Rest In Peace. Probably Italian circa 1850 and possibly a reference to the First Italian War of Independence (see illustration).
