A 19th century shell cameo brooch Aerial riding on a bats back, probably Italian, circa 1850, the subject is taken from Shakespeare's The Tempest and treatment closely resembles a painting of 1826 by the artist Joseph Severn long resident in Rome which is also in the Victoria & Albert collection. The cameo is mounted in a gold coloured Etruscan oval. 44 mm X 35 mm (see illustration).
