Burkett and David Sloss, published 1995. Matthias Read was described by John Harris as "The Father of Cumbrian Painting". He was one of the first native painters of the English landscape. This painting Ouse Bridge was featured in the aforementioned book, page 51, with illustration in colour as plate 8. The painting looks over Bassenthwaite Lake giving a panoramic view of the site. On the sloping bank in the foreground are two well painted men in tricorn hats sitting on the ground in conversation. The picture features the Old Wath at Ouse Bridge, originally known as Ewes Bridge. The man in the frock coat sitting in the foreground is probably Matthew Wane (1643-1725). He married his second wife Jane Watson of Cockermouth and a bread cupboard in the Dower House from which this painting hails bears the initials "M" and "IW" 1692. Mary Burkett notes that "It must be one of the earliest successful landscape paintings by an English hand and is a splendid evocation of the gentle loveliness of Cumbrian countryside.
