* John Sell Cotman (1782-1842), pencil study of ruins of an abbey, possibly Fountains Abbey, Yorkshire, numbered 92 in pencil (within a circle). 32.5 cm x 24 cm, with label verso "Bought at Sotheby & Co. Sale 12.7.67 Lot 190, price £15.00, collection of Mrs John Sell Cotman". Also note signed "Norma Watt" and dated 23.10.92, suggests 92 is Fountains Abbey, Yorkshire. He first visited here in 1803 and exhibited the subject five times between 1804-1839. See Rayner & Allthorpe-Guyton "John Sell Cotman Early Drawings", in Norwich Castle Museum 1979 No. 27 for details of the different versions. There were twenty one drawings in Mrs Cotman's sale at Sothebys in 1967 of which at least nine were Normandy subjects. The museum bought one of Castle of Arques (see illustration).
