Beatrix Potter (H.B. Heelis) a letter June 24th 1918, describing a journey through Bothel, Carlisle, Langholm and through The Cheviots. The letter written by Mrs Heelis to John Mackereth who was Beatrix Potter's first farm manager at the time. The Mackereth family lived at Hill Top as Beatrix had married and moved to a cottage nearby. The trip was to the funeral of Beatrix Potter's brother and she laments that "he could not die for his country in France since he was appointed to die, it seems a pity for a man to die in bed". The letter also describes the nature of the deceased illness and goes on to talk about the weather. The letter is sold with a photograph that we believe to be of John Mackereth and a copy of Margaret Lane's book "The Tale of Beatrix Potter, A Biography". There is also a letter of provenance from the recently deceased descendent of Mr John Mackereth. A postcard of a shearling tup, inked verso in the hand of Mrs Heelis detailing prizes awarded at Penrith, Keswick, Ennerdale and Gosforth is also included (see illustration).
