Lot 1003

An important taxidermy 39 lb 8 oz hen salmon "Fly Caught on the Eden at Caldew Foot." This huge spring caught Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar) was preserved by Raine Brothers Scientific Ornamental Taxidermists, Carlisle. The blue back hen fish was caught on February 28th 1912 by Carlisle fishmonger and worthy Robert Forster Senior, Carlisle, and took 45 minutes to land. Salmon of this size have not been caught on the Eden for many decades and this maybe the largest River Eden known taxidermy example in existence. In 1962 the salmon disease UDN killed thousands of salmon in Cumbrian rivers and in particular The Eden. The disease killed off the 62 "spring run," and in effect all spring runs of that strain from that date, as River Spey eggs were apparently used for re-stocking. This is probably why such large Eden salmon have not been seen since 1962. The fish had pride of place in the Forster family's fresh fish shop in Botchergate Carlisle. Housed in the same case is a 4 lb 6 oz trout also caught by R Forster at Glenshiel, Ross-Shire August 10th 1936. Salmon length 120 cm, trout length 51 cm. Case dimensions 139 cm x 52 cm x 20 cm. NOTE: Mitchell's would like to thank Glyn Freeman (Association of Advanced Professional Game Angling Instructors) of Cumbria Fly Fishing in cataloging this lot. Glyn has fished in Cumbria and The Borders for over 25 years. He is based on the River Eden where he is a keeper on the lower river (see illustration).
