Michael Bennett (1934-2016), mixed media composition "Pitted Bowl 1" pastel shades on panel. 52 cm x 46 cm, framed, signed and dated 1985-95. NOTE: This master work by this important Cumbrian artist was conceived over a ten year period 1985-95. It is mixed media including gravels and sands from the Solway Firth. It has colours and tones inspired by Mark Rothko (1903-1970) an artist who Bennett admired. The work was originally sold at Castlegate Gallery Cockermouth where prospective purchasers were queuing from 5 am in order to buy this and other works. Michael Bennett wrote to the current owner suggesting that this was one of his best pieces of work. Michael Bennett was a shy and reclusive man but alongside Nicholson, Graves and Kelly should be considered as one of the important Cumbrian painters of the 20th century (see illustration).
