Julian Cooper (born 1947), oil on canvas "Scafell Crag" 2001. 156" x 120" (396 cm x 304 cm). Provenance: This painting has hung in the atrium of Rheged Discovery Centre near Penrith since Prime Minister Tony Blair unveiled it at the centre's opening in 2001. The Mountain Heritage Trust commissioned the painting in 2000. The picture shows Scafell Crag in the distance with Pikes Crag in the foreground. The figures are some of Julian's friends and family who posed for the painting by climbing the routes of Moss Ghyll Grooves on Scafell Crag, and Crenation Ridge on Pikes Crag (see illustration).

A spokesman for the MHT said "The Mountain Heritage Trust is excited by the forthcoming sale of Julian Cooper's wonderful Scafell Crag, which many may remember from hanging at Rheged during the time of the National Mountaineering Exhibition. With the painting finding a new owner, the MHT will be able to further their important aims of preserving, conserving and cataloguing their outstanding collections of archives and objects related to British Mountaineering and Climbing that are held at its accommodation in Threlkeld" ARR.
