A pair of Chinese carved Huanghuali figures, depicting a man and a woman, in elegant period costume, each holding a staff, the ladies hair caught in a chignon, on integral stepped bases with carved leaf decoration, Qing dynasty. 110 cm and 105 cm high respectively (see illustration).

Lot 601

A Chinese Huanghuali horseshoe back settee, the three section crest rail supported on shaped tapering spindles, with soft matt rush seat, the rounded legs united by stretchers and footrest. 95 cm high, 125 cm wide. NOTE: The use of vertical rungs in horseshoe backseat furniture is very rare. A pair of Huanghuali armchairs in the Hun collection are illustrated by R. Hatfield, Ellsworth et al, Chinese Furniture - 100 examples form the Mimi and Raymond Hun collection, New York 1996, page 79 number 19. the refined substitution of the more tradition back splats with circular section tapered curved spindles echoes the graceful open design more frequently seen in low back armchairs. The three section back rail necessitates a lavish use of high quality timber (see illustration).
