The horn is decorated with the 80th Regiment of Foot (Staffordshire Volunteers) 1st Battle Honour from 1801 when it was sent as part of the Indian Army Force to eject Napoleon from Egypt. The Sphinx super - scribed "Egypt" is still carried on the Regimental Colour today. The horn tells a story from the departure from home by ship to Egypt with various flags and battle emblems to a joyful return home to a loved one with church and marriage scene and with Britannia and sailing vessels. The horn appears to have been carved by a G. Faren. The carving to the horn is naive yet appealing. It is likely that the horn is early 19th century and dating from the period of the Napoleonic Wars and likely to have been carved on the return voyage. Length 20.5 ins. PROVENANCE - the horn has been in the same family since the early 20th century. NOTE - the Revolutionary War with France in 1793 resulted in the formation of several new regiments one of which was the 80th Regiment of Foot (Staffordshire Volunteers) raised by Lord Henry Padgett later 1st Marques of Anglesey (see illustration).
